Work Permits
By O. Ghad-Pleeselp

At present every country in the EU has a slightly different process for granting Work Permits to residents of non-EU countries. The European Commission began work on the issue of Work Permits back in 1999 to develop an EU-wide process for non-EU nationals to be allowed to work. Back in October 2007 they brought a proposal to introduce a work permit similar to the US,s `Green Card` program, which would go on to be called the `Blue Card`. It is similar to the UK`s Highly Skilled Migrant Programme, with the exception that it will require an employment contract prior to any migration. After 2 years in the first country, the migrant will be allowed to move and work in other parts of the EU. This new card will abolish Work Permits right across the EU. There are currently 6 standard ways to apply for a work permit in the UK: Each of these involves its own application process, and generally requires a job offer from a British employer. You can get more detailed advice on this subject form a solicitor who specialises in immigration law.
